It's simple, when online, you can tune in between races with the previous game (forza 2), but the new game removed this capability for some reason. Anyway, the fun of playing online with your friends is ruined when everyone has to leave to change the alignment or gearing of their car between races.
The solution is simple: Find a copy of Forza 2 at the used game store, and have fun!
